Sunscreen is a shield from the sun - individuals use the term sunscreen too literally. They think that they are applying a defensive layer that acts as a shield from the sun's rays. This is an incorrect mind-set about it. The simple truth is, it is more like a dampener. The sun's rays still goes through the skin but not as intense as before. Sunscreen Can Make Or Break Your Vacation

By Kyle Piraino

Sunscreen can be something that makes or breaks your vacation. Take it from me, there is nothing worse than getting to your vacation destination and on the first day burning yourself to an excruciating crisp. When I was a kid, I went on vacation with my family to an island called Barbados, which is miles away from South America. It was February when we went, so let's just say I was less than pale.

You always assume that you will be fine when you first go out into the sun after the long winter. Have to have that base tan so you can get the nice bronze glow later. Unfortunately, when you are a rock's throw from South America, it doesn't quite work that way. You actually get, essentially, cooked. Well, that happened to me. Without sunblock I was baked in a very small amount of time causing a large amount of pain.

With my own experience I have learned not to mess with the sun. It is very rarely nice to you. I am Italian with relatively dark skin and I still paid a large price for my insolence. I thought I could get away with no sunscreen, but now I know it is absolutely crucial to wear sunscreen when first going into the sun after being in a cave all winter.

One of the lesser known facts about sunscreen is that you have to keep it on your skin. You can't just rub it into the skin and expect it to be protected. You have to keep a physical barrier between your skin and the sun in order for it to work. This is important and can be overlooked which can cause you to be confused as to why your skin is still burning when sunscreen is applied.

Knowing these things would have helped me in the past, but I have not taken this information for granted. There are always times when you believe you can beat the sun and you end up getting a little burnt, but when you have had no sun contact all winter, sunscreen is an absolute must.

The Holiday Season May Need Sunscreen

By Rob Sutter

When I went outside this morning, I couldn't have fathomed that it would be as cold as it was. Even when I felt like I had everything under control as far as my attire was concerned, I wasn't prepared well for the winter-like chill that hit me. Maybe it was my fault, since New York typically has weather patterns that can be predicted. What about areas that don't have such luxuries? These places are where sunscreen sales seem to be at their highest.

I know those who live in places where hot and humid weather is constant, such as my family within Florida. This state couldn't be hotter if it tired, from the few times I've been down there, and enjoying a Thanksgiving there was certainly an experience. I don't think I ever ate a full roasted turkey dinner with all the trimmings in such sunny weather. The amount of humidity along with the warmth factor Florida possesses makes sunscreen a necessity. Likewise, amongst other skincare authorities, can assist you in finding your ideal type.

Even if my girlfriend thinks of herself as a New Yorker without question, she originally came from North Hollywood, California. According to her, she said that there wasn't a good deal of variety in terms of weather changes and things remained mild for the most part. She wanted snow during the holidays more than anything when she was living there as a child, too, which shows just how hot that state could become. The ever-present Sun is a clear indicator of not only the Sun's humidity but overall warmth as well.

What about the state that many people don't remember since it's technically separate from the rest of the United States? Yes, Hawaii is always a very hot place to live and having essentially summertime weather every single day makes it a great attraction for families. How good will you look after coming home from vacation and talking about how you spent your break with people at work? Telling them you went to Hawaii in order to soak up the rays can only help you.

If you decide to go to one of these spots on vacation, then make certain you know what you're getting into. Those who have lived there for years understand what they have to do to maintain healthy skin and so should you. People absolutely need sunscreen in order to go to these places so be certain that the right skincare methods are kept in mind. I've been through enough bouts of reddened skin in my life thanks to the harsh Sun to drive such a point home.

Studies show that there are 1 in 7 adults that are Vitamin D deficient. This just proves that there are less people who find the sun harmful rather than beneficial.

Recently, the sun has been linked to various skin diseases such as skin cancer. Doctors and practitioners show that the sun is the major culprit when it comes to skin diseases. However, the important thing to remember is moderation. It is true that the sun's UVA rays produce free radicals. A person gets sunburned when there is an increased of these UVA rays. If a person is exposed to these UVA rays for long hours, his skin cells may be damaged. But, the most shocking part of all is that the FDA has not changed or made any actions to alter or modify the labeling and safety guidelines for sunscreen. Since 1978, there were no changes with regard to regulating the ingredients or manufacturing of effective and safe sunscreen. Recently, it is only in Europe and Japan that manufacture and market sunscreen which are made of natural ingredients. But, in US, the FDA won't approve of using these natural sunscreens.

Sun Protection Suits and UV Wear for Children

By Catherine Graham

It is well known that exposure to the sun causes skin damage, causing premature ageing of the skin and more worryingly, skin cancer. We now know how important it is to protect our skin from sun damage and can achieve this by wearing sun protection clothing.

A white cotton T-shirt has been shown to offer the equivalent sun protection of an SPF 5 sunscreen. The way in which a material is woven has an impact on the sun protection offered. A tighter knit or weave provides greater protection from harmful UV rays, whereas a looser weave will allow more of the sun's rays through.

It is very important for infants to be protected from the damaging effects of the sun to prevent skin cancer in adulthood. Any manufacturer of sun protection clothing needs to have fully tested their garments to be approved as UV protective. The garment should be at least UPF 15 in order to be classed as sun protection clothing.

Generally, sun protection clothing provides better protection from the sun than chemical products. Despite offering a high SPF rating, sunscreens can give a false sense of security and the wearer could remain in the sun for too long a period without re-applying. Very often, not enough sunscreen is applied and each individual's skin type reacts differently to the sun's rays. UV protective clothing will eliminate these concerns.

Remember : UV rays from the sun can cause skin damage on cloudy days , in any temperature and during any season. Most people receive 80% of their lifetime exposure to the sun by 18 years of age. The message to parents from this is to protect your children. Remember, skin cancer is very slow to develop. The sunburn you receive this week may take 20 years or more to become skin cancer.

There are many products on the market from T-shirts and leggings to full-length body suits, rash vests and Legionnaires hats. Whatever garments you choose for your child, you will want to ensure that they are truly protected from the sun. UV protective swimwear with a UPF50+ blocks over 97.5% of the sun's ultra violet rays. Such clothing is therefore not just suitable for swimming but can be also worn for a range of outdoor activities such as cycling, sailing, surfing and playing on the beach or in the garden. There are many brands which specialise in the manufacture of sun protection clothing, selling babies and childrens UV suits through to adults sun protection clothing.

Always stay away from the sun between 10am and 4pm. This is when the sun is at its strongest and the UV damage will be greatest. Wear 100% UV ray protective sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on exposed areas, and always avoid tanning tubes, sun beds, etc.

What you Should to Know About Summer Season Sun Precautions

By Melanie DesChatelets

What we know about sunscreen

- It is truly good at preventing the scary sunburn when applied adequately.
- Can decrease the appearance of sun spots also known as solar keratosis.

What we believe we know

- Seems to reduce the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma, which is a slow growing and treatable skin cancer.
- Doe not appear to impact basal cell carcinoma.
- Sunscreen appears to lessen our capability to produce vitamin D. We presently have a Vitamin D deficiency epidemic.

What confuses the heck out of us

- Some studies report higher frequency while other studies report lower incidence of the most dangerous form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma, among frequent users of sunscreen. This is most likely due to increase exposure to UVA regardless of acceptable UVB sunscreen protection.
- It's easy to be disillusioned when the medical specialties advise contradict each other.

The American Medical Association recommends 10 minutes of unguarded daily sun exposure for vitamin D production.

The American Academy of Dermatology states there is no scientifically certified, safe level of UV exposure from the sun that allows for adequate vitamin D creation without augmenting dermatological cancer risk.

What you can do about it

The best protection is physical protection such as protective clothing, hats and sunglasses which shield you from the dangerous impact of ultraviolet-A rays on your skin without any dangerous chemicals. Staying out of the sun during top times and searching for a shady environment is also key to your safest defense. Sunscreen should be considered when doing the prior recommendations is inescapable. The environmental working group advocates mineral cream based sunscreens containing zinc or titanium dioxide as they have little skin penetration. If mineral based sunscreen cannot be used avobenzone or mexoryl Sx appear like the next best bet.

Sunscreens to avoid

- Oxybenzone: Found in sixty percent of sunscreens. It's understood to penetrate the skin, it is really absorbent and a potential hormone disruptor.
- Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) : Preliminary but replicable studies have proved it to be photocarcinogenic- carcinogenic once exposed to ultraviolet light. Vitamin A is present in over 41% of all sunscreens on the market despite these discoveries.
- Sprays and powders should be avoided due to concern of lung inflammation when inhaled.

Check out how safe the sunscreen you currently use is at the environmental working group sunscreen database. An iphone application isavailable too.
